Background

PayPal announced on Tuesday that it will let users shop and pay directly within ChatGPT starting in 2026. The company is partnering with OpenAI to use the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), a system that allows merchants to list and sell products inside AI apps.

This new feature will work with OpenAI’s “Instant Checkout”, which helps users confirm their order, shipping, and payment details without leaving ChatGPT. Users will be able to pay using their PayPal wallets, giving them access to buyer and seller protection and dispute support.

PayPal also plans to enable card payments through its own payment API within ChatGPT. The company said that from next year, merchants using PayPal will have their products automatically discoverable in ChatGPT, covering categories like clothing, beauty, electronics, and home improvement. Merchants won’t need to create any special setup, as PayPal will handle payments and routing in the background.

Along with this, PayPal is launching an agentic commerce suite that will help businesses feature their products across AI apps, collect payments, and understand customer behavior.

The move is part of PayPal’s broader effort to become a key payments partner in AI-driven shopping. Earlier, the company partnered with Perplexity and Google for similar integrations.

“Every week, hundreds of millions of people turn to ChatGPT and PayPal,” said Alex Chriss, CEO of PayPal. “Our collaboration with OpenAI aims to make the experience seamless, allowing users to transition from chatting to completing a purchase in only a few taps.”
