Background :
Stellantis and Mutares SE & Co. KGaA have signed an agreement for Mutares to acquire Stellantis’ entire shareholding in the Free2move car-sharing business, with the deal expected to close by the end of 2026.
Free2move runs short- and long-term free-floating car-sharing services, bookable around the clock through its own mobile app, with fleets spread across 14 cities in Europe and the United States.
The move fits into Stellantis’ FaSTLAne 2030 plan, which channels investment and resources toward the regions, brands and technologies best positioned to deliver strong returns.
With Mutares now in charge, Free2move’s car-sharing arm turns into a new platform within the mobility sector, carrying plans to overhaul fleet management, speed up the move to battery-electric vehicles, and put sharper focus on customer experience and the urban mobility needs of municipalities.
Backing from Mutares is expected to give the business greater agility, dedicated investment and more operational flexibility as it grows in a competitive market.
Virgilio Cerutti, Head of Business Development & Partnerships at Stellantis, said sharpening the company’s focus on core automotive activities strengthens its capacity to deliver long-term performance, adding that Stellantis remains committed to working closely with stakeholders to support a smooth transition for customers, partners and employees.
Johannes Laumann, CIO of Mutares, said Free2move’s car-sharing business brings a strong, internationally recognised brand with clear room for operational improvement, and said Mutares looks forward to working with the management team to build the company into a leading independent platform in the mobility sector. Completion remains subject to regulatory approvals and customary conditions.
