Background:

Lucid Motors, famous for its electric cars, is launching its first SUV, the three-row Gravity. It starts at about $79,900 and is meant to attract more buyers beyond the Air sedan.

Even with its advanced technology and long driving range, Lucid has had trouble making enough cars. Shortages of important materials like magnets, aluminum, and computer chips have slowed production. However, the company has added a second shift to its final assembly line and reports that production issues are largely resolved, allowing deliveries to increase for seven consecutive quarters.

“The demand for the Gravity has been very encouraging,” said Marc Winterhoff, Lucid’s interim CEO. “Most customers are opting for configurations above $100,000, and interest remains strong despite changes in federal EV incentives.”

Lucid’s Air sedan has been widely praised by critics and remains the top-selling electric full-size luxury sedan in the U.S., yet overall sales remain modest compared to competitors. In 2025, Lucid delivered only a few hundred Gravity SUVs, showing the challenge of competing with Tesla and other big brands.

The company plans a more affordable $50,000 SUV and is developing self-driving tech with Uber and Nuro.

Lucid‍‌‍‍‌ announced a $1 billion operating loss for the third quarter. However, the oil-rich Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) continues to back the automaker, which closes the funding gap until the middle of 2027. Lucid is teaming up with movie star Timothée Chalamet in its new marketing campaign, which focuses on a Lucid ownership ‍‌‍‍‌experience.

With growing demand, smart manufacturing, and future models planned, Lucid aims to expand in the electric vehicle market.
