Key Facts:

  • China has collaborated with over 100 countries on green energy projects, helping developing nations reduce emissions and boost economic growth.
  • Between 2021 and 2024, China produced 15.6 trillion kilowatts of photovoltaic modules, generating 3.2 trillion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity and cutting carbon emissions by 2.54 billion metric tons.

Background:

China plans to expand its green technologies globally and strengthen renewable energy partnerships, staying committed to a low-carbon future.

In an exclusive article, Li Lecheng, Minister of Industry and Information Technology, highlighted China’s determination to strengthen green transformation across its vast manufacturing landscape. He stated that the country will continue supporting enterprises in new energy vehicles, batteries, wind power and photovoltaics as they expand overseas and participate in major clean-energy projects, particularly in Belt and Road economies.

Li said China’s new Nationally Determined Contributions, announced by President Xi Jinping during the United Nations Climate Summit 2025, set ambitious but achievable goals. These include raising installed wind and solar capacity to more than six times the 2020 level by 2035, reaching around 3,600 gigawatts, and making new energy vehicles the mainstream choice in the domestic auto market.

China already leads the world in renewable energy production. Its solar and wind equipment meet over 80 percent and 70 percent of global demand, respectively, while more than half of the world’s electric vehicles operate on Chinese roads. Li said China has worked with over 100 countries on green energy projects, helping developing nations cut emissions and grow their economies.

Between 2021 and 2024 alone, China produced 15.6 trillion kilowatts of photovoltaic modules, generating an estimated 3.2 trillion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity worldwide and cutting carbon emissions by roughly 2.54 billion metric tons.

Looking ahead, China will strengthen green supply chains, develop future-oriented sectors such as hydrogen energy and carbon capture, and boost innovation across the industrial economy. Nearly half of Chinese enterprises were engaged in green technology innovation in 2024.

Industry experts say China’s mature, cost-competitive technologies are increasingly favored in international markets. Xpeng Motors CEO He Xiaopeng added that China’s strong industrial chain, AI capabilities, efficiency and scale will continue to drive global adoption of Chinese new energy vehicles.
