Background:

BYD has introduced its Yuan Up DM-i hybrid SUV to Europe, launching the model under the local name Atto 2 DM-i as part of the company’s ongoing expansion in the region. The vehicle made its European debut on November 19 in Barcelona, alongside the Atto 2 Comfort, a long-range battery electric version of the compact SUV.

What makes this launch stand out is that the hybrid version is not offered in China, where the Yuan family is currently sold only as fully electric models. BYD is adjusting its products to suit the European market by offering customers both a plug-in hybrid and a fully electric version of the new model.

The company says the decision comes after strong interest and feedback from European buyers, who want more choices in how they drive. Since its launch in Europe, the compact SUV has been well received, encouraging BYD to expand the range with hybrid and extended-range electric versions.

The Atto 2 DM-i uses BYD’s own DM-i hybrid system, providing up to 90 km of electric-only driving and a total range of around 1,000 km when fully charged and fueled. Meanwhile, the Atto 2 Comfort BEV variant offers a WLTP range of 430 km, more than 100 km higher than the entry model.

The Yuan series remains one of BYD’s bestselling families globally, with nearly 49,000 units sold in October. Even though sales dipped slightly from last year, the Yuan lineup is still doing well worldwide.

BYD cars are now sold in 33 European countries, and the company plans to increase its dealerships to 1,000 by year-end, highlighting its focus on growing in Europe’s electric and hybrid car market.
