Background

Nvidia, one of the world’s most valuable technology companies, is betting big on robotics as its next major growth area beyond artificial intelligence. On Monday, the company launched its latest robotics chip module, the Jetson AGX Thor, available as a developer kit for $3,499.

The Jetson AGX Thor, which is at its core a robot brain, is based on the Bluewell section processors designed by Nvidia. The new chips offer 7.5 times higher performance than earlier generation and feature 128GB of memory, necessary to run large AI models, according to Nvidia.

The company will also offer the Thor T5000 modules that can be installed in production-ready robots. For bulk purchases of more than 1,000 units, Nvidia will lower the price to $2,999 per module, making it more accessible for large-scale industrial applications.

Nvidia’s founder and CEO Jensen Huang has emphasized that robotics represents the company’s biggest growth opportunity outside AI. Commenting on the announcement, Deepu Talla, vice president of robotics and edge AI at Nvidia, said: We are not in the business of building robots and we are not in the business of building cars, but we enable the entire industry with our infrastructure, our computers, and associated software.

The Jetson chips already have a strong customer base, with major companies such as Amazon, Meta, and Agility Robotics using Nvidia’s technology to power advanced robotics and automation projects.

Nvidia, which has emerged as a major player in the market of AI chips, and one of the three largest global companies by market capitalization, is set on driving its innovation efforts in robotics, where it is going to change industries with next-generation computing power.

This move puts the company at both the center of the AI revolution and, as well, at the center of the robotics wave that has the potential to transform automation across the globe.
