Oracle has secured a contract worth nearly $7 billion from the US Department of Defense to provide software and related services over the next decade. The agreement covers Oracle software used in on-premises data centres across military branches, the US intelligence community and the Coast Guard.
The contract includes a five-year base period with perpetual and subscription-based software licences, maintenance services and consulting support. The Department of Defense said the new procurement approach will reduce costs and save taxpayers at least $441 million.
The deal marks a major contract win for Oracle at a time when the company has faced pressure in the stock market. Its shares gained about 3% in extended trading following the announcement.
Oracle has maintained a long relationship with the US government. The Central Intelligence Agency was the company’s first customer. In recent months, Oracle has also signed agreements with the Defense Department to support artificial intelligence deployments in classified networks.
The company has increased its focus on AI infrastructure, investing heavily in data centres to meet growing demand from customers, including OpenAI. Nevertheless, these investments have contributed to an increase in its debt levels, whereas the concern of investors regarding the effect of AI on traditional software companies continues.
Oracle has reported a 2% fall in software revenue year-on-year in its latest quarterly earnings report. On the other hand, revenues from the cloud experienced an increase of 47% because of high demand for AI computing.
The current Pentagon contract will definitely enhance Oracle’s reputation in the market for technology used in the government sector.
