DoorDash has introduced a temporary relief program for its delivery drivers in the United States and Canada as fuel prices continue to rise. The ongoing Iran–U.S. conflict has pushed gas prices higher.
The company said the program will run until April 26 and aims to reduce the financial pressure on drivers who depend on their vehicles for daily work. Under the plan, drivers who travel at least 125 miles per week will receive weekly payments starting from $5. This can reduce fuel costs by about $1 to $1.50 per gallon.
In addition, drivers who use DoorDash’s debit card will also get 10% cashback on fuel purchases. This can help them save up to about $1.90 per gallon and gives extra support as fuel prices rise.
Fuel remains one of the biggest expenses for gig workers. Unlike full-time employees, delivery drivers must pay for their own fuel, maintenance, and insurance. Rising gas prices have made it harder for them to maintain stable earnings.
Recent data shows that fuel costs have increased sharply. The average price of petrol in the U.S. is now close to $4 per gallon, up by more than $1 in just one month. This rise has significantly increased weekly expenses for drivers without any major increase in pay.
Higher fuel costs and changing demand for deliveries are also affecting driver income. Many drivers are earning less per delivery, even as they work longer hours.
DoorDash had introduced a similar support program in 2022 during another spike in fuel prices. Other companies in the sector also took similar steps at that time to support drivers.
